One in eight of Europe’s butterflies are under threat, according to a new report. The survey, conducted by the British group Butterfly Conservation and its Dutch counterpart, found that 71 of 576 species have declined steadily this century. The marsh fritillary has lost 60 per cent of its habitat and is one of the hardest hit. A further 43 species are struggling, although they are not classed as threatened under international guidelines. “Many of the declines can be blamed on the breakdown of traditional agriculture,” says the report’s author Martin Warren. Converting grasslands to arable crops,
